Arnold Schwarzenegger has vetoed a bill that would have given farmworkers overtime pay for working more than forty hours a week or eight hours a day. This would have merely given farmworkers the same right that other workers in California have.
Arnold used to get paid millions of dollars just to show up for film shoots. (No acting was required.) Yet he thinks it’s unreasonable for farmworkers who make $10.25 an hour to get overtime.
Some nerve.

I was a little surprised to read this as I thought all workers were paid overtime after 40 hours.
I’d be a little weary of the AVERAGE $10.25 an hour. I would guess it is a lot less than that for most workers.
It is also worth noting that the eight hour day only means that by law the bosses must pay you overtime after 40 hours a week. They can say overtime is mandatory and get you to work 13 or 14 hours a day! There is really NO LIMIT! ( I phoned up the state hour and wage bureau). They only have to give you 10 hours off between shifts.
That’s why we need to rebuild our unions and fight for a decent work week and pay packet!

I don’t doubt that a lot of these workers are paid a lot less than $10.25 an hour, especially since many of them are undocumented. I merely got the $10.25 figure from the article.
Under California law, most workers have to be paid overtime if they work more than eight hours in a day.
